This unit looks at drums in several contexts. It is anticipated that it will be taught near the beginning of the Year 9 course. Duration is between 10-15 one-hour lessons.

Students are introduced to:
beat and rhythm
dynamics, tempo, form

Compositional devices
call and response
accent and syncopation
through interactive power point lessons.

Students use worksheets to complete pre-tasks.

They then a
pply techniques studied to group compositions which they perform, reflect on and refine.

There is a contextual focus on djembe drumming, and drums throughout the world.


The resource includes:

  • Two teaching interactive power points with aural, practical and written activities
